September 30th: Hip-Hop and Blues Playlist Curated by Dr. Angela Mosley

ree

The sound and storytelling with “From the Blues to Hip-Hop” brings you the voice of Womanism. It’s about Black women as the conjurors, the prayer warriors, and those who make (something) appear unexpectedly or seemingly from nowhere, while STILL being emotionally and physically present…and they ain’t no monolith. When Black women conjure, they call upon the sacred spirits that have eternally sustained the world to cover the community. These stories, joined by time and the elements of water, fire, and air, reconnect with the earth through a spiritual transfer of knowledge.  When using the word “conjure,” it evokes the God of our ancestors, who breathed life into us. When telling our own stories as cultural self-expressions, we’re advocating for a sound of us, by us. It’s conjuring through our Blues a release of overwhelming emotions that infuse the power of words, imagination, creation, and being. It spellbinds love through milder tonalities of R&B, lingers a bit longer in the screams of Rock’ n Roll, grooves funkier in Soul, prays incessantly in the name of our advocacy through Gospel, and lets the pain, grief, anger, and joy unspeakable live on from Jazz, to Hip-Hop, to everlasting. So, in our music, when you see us sway in the spirit or hear us wail in our healing…it's for things to be well with our souls.
